The launch of “The World Bank Jordan Economic Monitor Spring 2020: Weathering the Storm” report

The World Bank and the Jordan Strategy Forum in cooperation with the Ministry of Planning & International Cooperation are holding a joint event to launch “The Jordan Economic Monitor Spring 2020: Weathering the Storm” report, a bi-annual publication of the World Bank. The Jordan Economic Monitor (JEM) aims to apprise the Government of Jordan, think-tanks and researchers and the public on Jordan’s recent economic developments, outlook and development challenges. The report also includes  Special Focus sections which present findings from recent World Bank work on Jordan, place them in a longer-term and global context, and assess the implications of these developments and other changes in policy for the outlook of Jordan. The Special Focus sections of the Spring 2020 JEM report are Women and Work in Jordan and Jordan’s Jobs Diagnostics.

Dr. Wissam Al Rabadi

Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Dr. Rabadi is an executive with over 20 years of experience in Economic Development, Strategic Planning, Entrepreneurship Support, Investment and Innovation Management. He was the Chief of Party for the USAID Jordan Competitiveness Program (JCP), a 6 years $50M project with the objective of enhancing the competitiveness of the Jordanian Private Sector in high growth sectors such as ICT, CleanTech and Life Sciences. Before his current position, Dr. Rabadi was the Executive Director of the iPARK Technology Incubator at El Hassan Science City, Director of the Entrepreneurship Program at the Arab Science and Technology Foundation (ASTF), Director of Research and Business Development at King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB). He was the VP for Strategic Planning at Zakroff Group, LLP, a Houston-based firm providing investment advice and international business development services to US firms. Prior to that, he was the Strategic Business Development Manager at Texas Instruments Inc. in the US. His work at Texas Instruments included New Product Development, Commercialization of New Technology, Business Development and Venture Investments. Dr. Rabadi held several academic positions at Princess Sumaya University for Technology (PSUT), the American University in Dubai (AUD), the University of Houston and at the Center for Research in Electro-Optics and Laser (CREOL) in Florida, USA. He also carried several consulting engagements with the World Bank, European Investment Bank and EU. Dr. Rabadi holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Jordan, a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida and an MBA from the University of Texas in Austin.

 

Mr. Saroj Kumar Jha

Saroj Kumar Jha is Regional Director of the Mashreq Department at the World Bank Group since 2017. Jha brings to the region a vast experience in a critical period of transition. Prior to his current position, he was the Senior Director for the Fragility, Conflict and Violence Global Practice at the WBG. He provided strategic leadership addressing the challenge of fragility, conflict and violence, working across the World Bank Group and in close collaboration with partners. Earlier, Mr. Jha was the World Bank’s Regional Director for Central Asia based in Almaty (2012-2016) where he led the Bank’s strategic engagements in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

 
 

Dr. Ibrahim Saif

Dr. Ibrahim Saif is the CEO of Jordan Strategy Forum; previously, he served as the Minister of Energy & Mineral Resources from March 2015 to June 2017, and the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation from March 2013 until March 2015. Prior to his appointment as a Minister, Saif was a Senior Scholar at the Carnegie Middle East Center, and served as a consultant to the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and other international organizations. Saif was also a Former Director of the Centre for Strategic Studies at the University of Jordan, and served as the Secretary General of the Economic and Social Council in Jordan. He has taught at both the University of London and Yale University, where he led courses on the economies of the Middle East.

 

Dr. Saadia Refaqat

Is Sr. Country Economist for World Bank Jordan Before coming to Jordan, she was working as Sr. Country Economist for the World Bank in Pakistan. She has previously also worked for International Monetary Fund, Pakistan and Washington DC. She bring with herself, fifteen years of experience of working as a development and macro-economist. She is a graduate of Williams College, USA (Master’s in Development Economics) and University of Bath, UK (Doctorate in Economics) and recipient of prestigious scholarships including Fulbright scholarship for graduate studies and Commonwealth Scholarship for doctorate studies.

 

 

Dr. Radwan Shaaban

Radwan Ali Shaban is Chief Economist of Arab Bank. Before joining Arab Bank in 2011, Radwan worked at the World Bank in various capacities, including the first Kuwait Country Manager for the World Bank (2008-2011), Lead Economist for Egypt (2007-08), and Lead Economist for the Mashreq Countries (2004-07), as well as Regional Coordinator for the Europe and Central Asia Region on living standards and poverty (2001-04), and Senior Country Economist for the GCC (1998-2001). He has a Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University (1985). Radwan taught at the University of Pennsylvania (1985-1991) and Georgia Institute of Technology (1991-98); worked at Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (1988-89); was founding Director of Research at the Palestine Economic Policy Research Institute (MAS) (1994-95); and founding Research Fellow of the Economic Research Forum. Dr. Shaban has written on various development topics, including macroeconomics, labor markets, poverty, trade and regional integration, rural development and institutions, and industrial development.

 

 

Dr. Rajeh Alkhdour 

Assistant Executive Director at the Research Department of the Central Bank of Jordan since Jan 2018.He worked in the Central Bank of Jordan since 1994, and served in many positions; mainly the Head of the National Economy Division during 2012-2017.Served as Senior Economic Policy Coordinator at the King Abdullah II Office\ the Royal Hashemite Court. Aug 2004 – Aug 2006. He Has PhD in Economics, From Colorado State University (CSU),USA, Master in Economics, from University of Jordan, Bachelor in Economics, from Yarmouk University.

 

 

Ms. Samar Obaid - Moderator 

(Partner, MENA Markets and Government & Public Sector Leader – Strategy & Transactions) Leveraging more than 24 years of advisory experience, Samar Obaid currently serves as EY’s MENA Strategy & Transactions Services Markets as well as Government & Public Sector Leader. Furthermore, she leads EY's MENA Corporate Finance solutions. Over the course of her career, Obaid garnered her in-depth knowledge working with local and regional clients within the Government, Financial Services, and Life sciences sectors, among others. As a Corporate Finance expert, Obaid’s expertise is often called upon for the purpose of corporate planning, capital allocation, portfolio management, financial reporting, purchase or sale of assets or businesses, and investment strategy and restructuring. Obaid also assists companies and investors in developing business plans, carrying out business case analysis, evaluating project investment alternatives, and building financial models for complex decision support analysis, such as mergers and acquisitions, capital investments, budgeting, operational research, and measuring economic impact.
